Thanks Giving

If not the creator, then to who do we give thanks for blue skies, warm days, laughter, kindness, joy and loving relationships?

A little while ago I came home after a long, cold, dark, wet and rainy night at work. I had been working outdoors in an area that was very run down, seedy and had very little light which made working in the bad weather quite difficult and tiresome.

When I walked in the door at home and turned on the light, I looked around, took a deep breath and said to myself, “It is so good to be home.” Just to see all of my creature comforts lit up in the warmth and familiarity of home made me very grateful for light. I literally looked at the light bulb that illuminated the lounge room and thought at that moment, ‘I wish I could call Thomas Edison right now and thank him for such a brilliant and life altering invention.’

It occurred to me right then that as I go about my days, I am so often struck in awe at the multitude of functions this universe serves which therein gives me the quality of life that I have. The way the earth revolves around the sun causing night and day, the changing seasons that provide warmth for the body, rain for growth and cultivation and a body of beings who are made in love, to love, and to be loved. It seems that every function of the universe, every detail has been fine tuned to create a dwelling for our race to live out our lives in such a way that we live with incredible quality. Just enough oxygen to breathe without strain. Enough vegetation to eat without starving, enough water to keep our bodies hydrated. We have every organ necessary for our bodies to function and live prosperously in accordance with the provisions that have been given to us on this planet. And of course, we know the beauty of life that is love. All of these things would be completely pointless if we could not experience love. The virtue that threads together all of our surroundings into such an intricate and majestic tapestry we call life.

In that moment of wanting to thank T. Edison for the the light bulb, I realised something much larger, much more humbling, reassuring and exciting. Everything that I experience each day is possible because of God’s wonderful, wise and intelligent design. And every day I am able to talk to the designer of this universe and thank him for it all. I thank him for the sun. For the ocean. For giving me a new day each day to colour in with words, love and creativity and make beautiful. He has allocated to each of us an imagination that can continue to create, and so although I can’t contact T. Edison, I can thank the God that created him for the imagination that dwelt within him that gave birth to superficial light.

How wonderful to know that this God so loves me and that I can talk to him and give thanks to him any time. Every day. And that he hears me. He knows me. And that we have a personal, intimate, two way relationship. Remarkable!

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. – Psalm 19:1-3
